In part one of breaking down the pre scout, we looked at systems & tactics. If you missed that post, click here. In part two, we are going to discuss what goes on in faceoffs for all zones.
Defensive Zone - Wins
When looking at dzone faceoffs, we’re looking at how teams want to exit their zone. In the below image, teams will vary where their weak side forward goes depending on the pressure from the opposition. You can also reverse the puck or do a high flip to your forwards.
Defensive Zone - Losses
When scouting a team for the done faceoff losses, watch what the center does. Does the player stay with the opposition center or does he release and pick up another skate? Watch how fast the wingers sprint out and what the defensemen do.
Neutral Zone - Wins
There are many variations fo what teams can do in the neutral zone such as just going D to D and dumping the puck in, skating to one side and then firing the puck back east/west or interchanges to confuse their opponent.
Neutral Zone - Losses
Teams will back off and you can easily see their structure.
Offensive Zone - Wins
Teams can deploy a variety of plays in the ozone.
Offensive Zone - Losses
Losses can result on a team backing off to make sure they stay “above” the opposition to not to allow odd man rushes against. Watch if they push one or two and which forward pressure the puck carrier. Is it the inside or outside winger as its rarely a center.
*Different faceoff plays will work better versus different dzone structures
Final Thoughts
Faceoffs are one area of the game that starts from a stand still so all the players *in theory* should know their responsibilities on a win or a loss. Watch for basketball style picks and build a library for your staff.
